Fall Fur, Healthy Paws & Seasonal Wellness: Keeping Your Pets Happy This Autumn 🍂🐾

Fall is officially here!

The leaves are changing, temperatures are dropping, and somewhere in your house, your pet is probably shedding enough fur to create an entirely new animal.

Sound familiar?

While we love everything about autumn (well, maybe not the endless vacuuming),

seasonal changes can affect our pets in more ways than we realize. From shedding and skin health to exercise and parasite prevention,

a little extra attention can go a long way toward keeping your furry family members healthy and comfortable.

Let's talk about what to expect this fall!

🍁 Why Do Pets Shed More in the Fall?

Have you noticed more fur on your furniture, clothes, and floors lately?

Don't worry! For many dogs and cats, seasonal shedding is completely normal.

As daylight hours shorten, changes in light exposure help signal the body to adjust its coat.

Many pets shed portions of their summer coat while developing a thicker coat for winter.

Some breeds take this process a little more seriously than others!

Double-coated breeds, including Huskies, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers,

and certain cats, may experience particularly heavy seasonal shedding.

However, not all shedding is seasonal.

Indoor lighting, genetics, nutrition, and overall health can also influence how much fur your pet loses throughout the year.

🪮 Grooming Tips to Keep the Fluff Under Control

Unfortunately, we haven't discovered a magical way to make shedding disappear. Trust us, our vacuum cleaners wish we had!

But regular grooming can make a BIG difference.

1. Brush Regularly

Brushing removes loose fur before it ends up on your favorite black leggings. It also helps prevent painful mats and tangles.

Some pets benefit from daily brushing, while others only need a few sessions each week.

2. Choose the Right Grooming Tools

Not every brush works for every coat! Slicker brushes, grooming gloves, and undercoat rakes can all be helpful when used appropriately.

Be gentle, especially with deshedding tools, to avoid irritating the skin or damaging healthy hair.

3. Don't Forget Bath Time

Occasional bathing with a pet-appropriate shampoo helps remove dirt, loose fur, and dead skin cells.

Avoid over-bathing, which can strip natural oils and contribute to dryness or irritation.

4. Consider Professional Grooming

For our extra-fluffy friends, professional deshedding treatments can help remove loose undercoat and make coat maintenance easier.

And remember, double-coated breeds generally shouldn't be shaved simply to reduce shedding!

🐾 Normal Shedding vs. Something More Serious

Here's where we want pet parents to pay close attention.

Normal seasonal shedding may include:

  • Increased loose fur during brushing

  • More hair around your home

  • A healthy-looking coat without bald patches

  • Skin that appears comfortable and free of irritation

Signs that deserve veterinary attention include:

  • Bald spots or thinning patches

  • Excessive scratching, licking, or chewing

  • Redness, scabs, or irritated skin

  • Unusual odor or greasy skin

  • Sudden or dramatic changes in hair loss

These symptoms can indicate allergies, fleas, skin infections, hormonal conditions, or other underlying health concerns.

If something doesn't seem right, don't assume it's just seasonal shedding!

🍂 Fall Wellness: More Than Just Fur!

Autumn brings changes to our pets' daily routines, too. Here are a few additional things to keep in mind as the weather cools.

🥕 Nutrition & Healthy Weight

With holiday gatherings and delicious food around every corner, it's tempting to share extra treats with our four-legged family members.

Remember, maintaining a healthy weight is important for mobility, joint health, and overall wellness.

Stick with a balanced diet, offer treats in moderation, and keep fresh water available even when temperatures drop.

🐕 Exercise & Mental Enrichment

Shorter days shouldn't mean the end of playtime!

Continue regular walks when weather permits, and consider indoor enrichment activities

such as puzzle feeders, hide-and-seek, training games, and interactive toys.

Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise!

🐾 Nail & Paw Care

Fall adventures can be rough on little paws!

Check for cracked pads, damaged nails, and debris after outdoor activities.

Regular nail trims also help prevent painful overgrowth and support comfortable movement.

🦟 Fleas & Ticks Don't Take Fall Vacations!

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that cooler weather means parasite prevention is no longer necessary.

Unfortunately, fleas and ticks don't follow our holiday calendars!

Ticks can remain active during cooler weather, and fleas can survive indoors year-round.

Continue veterinarian-recommended parasite prevention and check your pets after outdoor adventures, especially in wooded areas and leaf litter.

🖤 A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

Our pets depend on us to notice when something changes, whether that's an unusual amount of shedding, itchy skin, decreased activity, or changes in appetite.

Regular grooming, proper nutrition, exercise, and preventive veterinary care all play important roles in keeping them happy and healthy.

And while a little extra fur around the house might be part of autumn, discomfort and unhealthy skin shouldn't be!

From all of us at Animal Clinic of Whiteford, we wish you and your furry family members a happy, healthy, and wonderfully cozy fall season! 🍂🐾
